Makam Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah, Pagoh

Parameswara and Sultan Mahmud Shah were not the only Melakan Sultans to have spent time in Pagoh. The 7th Sultan of Melaka (Sultan Mahmud Shah III’s father), Alauddin Riayat Shah, had his palace in Pagoh at a site down river from Kampung Berohol

Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah ruled from 1477 to 1488, and is buried alongside his wife in a mausoleum on the site of his palace on a hill top. The tombstones were imported from Acheh and have delicate inscriptions, but it is not clear to me which marks the husband vs. the wife.

This Sultan was considered good and wise (in marked contrast to his son!) but he died in mysterious circumstances. Generally that means one was killed by siblings, children, or other such rivals.

This whole area is known as Kampung Raja, indicating its importance. It is also the location of the fort of the last Sultan of Melaka, Sultan Mahmud Shah.
